Oil Tanking Malta (OTM) required an increase in oil storage capacity in order to satisfy an increased and urgent demand from their clients, AIS Environmental Ltd. coordinated the two EIAs. Besides the collation of baseline studies, the EIAs involved the investigation of the planning and legal context and the identification of potential impacts on the environment. These included impacts on geology, hydrology, air and water quality, noise and vibration, visual impact.
A detailed risk assessment was also compiled together with the application of a qualitative method in accordance with the EU “Seveso II” Directive on the Control of Major Accident Hazards and industry best practices. The methodology involved the identification of hazards, their classification according to likelihood of occurrence and potential consequences, and the prediction of potential accident scenarios. These scenarios were based on a qualitative cause and effect analysis, and the selected major accident scenarios were modelled. AIS Environmental’s experts proposed appropriate controls and mitigation measures for each of the identified hazards.
AIS Environmental Ltd has also carried out a monitoring program relating to the quality of groundwater at OTM. This program has served to evaluate the release of any pollutants from the facilities. |
