AIS Environmental Ltd was commissioned by MEPA to conduct an economic and environmental impact study to understand the capacity that enterprises have in achieving compliance with various environmental regulations. This study facilitated MEPA to apply support measures aimed at encouraging and stimulating the economic operators in achieving compliance with environmental regulations.
Four different environmental sectors have been identified namely:
• marine discharges,
• solid waste,
• chemical discharges
• emissions to air.
For each of these environmental sectors a list of questions has been drawn up, the answers of which should give a clear indication on the effect environmental legislation is having on the Maltese business sector. To download questionnaire please click here. In order to download the questionnaire you must enter the password which you will find on the letter sent to you by post.

Environmental Ltd. carries out waste minimisation audits and recycling studies on behalf of major industrial clients as well as for governmental and non-governmental organisations. These audits routinely involve identification of waste producing elements of the process or activity under audit and waste composition studies.
A technical and economic evaluation of the alternatives to waste production is then carried out and advice is provided with regard to scheme implementation and management.

GreenPak is the first compliance scheme authorised by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) to relieve operators of their responsibilities under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive.
AIS Environmental runs the GreenPak scheme as a not-for-profit scheme. Over 300 companies operating in food and drink, retail, fashion and a wide range of other products, are using GreenPak to ensure that the packaging generated through their activities is recovered and recycled.
As evidence of their participation, and to communicate their social responsibility to their customers, many of the companies participating in the GreenPak scheme use the Committed to Recycle seal, introduced in the first quarter of 2009. First to use the seal, was Marks and Spencers, by reproduce the mark on each of the carrier bag they give to their customers. Since then many others are using it on products, company stationary and other media that transmits this message to their customers.

Extended Producer Responsibility is the principle by which economic operators take responsibility for the environmental impacts of the goods they produce or import into a market. This principle is the basis of a number of EU Directives known as Producer Responsibility Directives which include amongst others the ELV and WEEE Directives and the Directive on packaging and packaging waste. AIS Environmental Ltd. has been involved extensively in the implementation of these Directives in Malta, providing assistance both to regulators and operators.

De La Rue is the world’s largest commercial security printer and papermaker. Their factory in the Bulebel Industrial estate in Malta produces foreign banknotes, mostly for non-European countries. Their procedures are subject to high levels of security and the waste they produce may be of a sensitive nature Their processes produce a large amount f security waste and small amount of hazardous waste. Currently De La Rue incinerate their security waste and have sought advice from AIS on alternative routes of disposal in view of the more stringent requirements for incinerators under the EU Waste Incineration Directive. We carried out a waste audit on the De La Rue premises to identify the exact nature and quantities of the waste stream which the company is dealing with and identified and appraised the current routes which are available in Malta for the various waste streams. |
