Oiltanking (Malta) Ltd. operate one of the largest oil storage facility on the island of Malta.

With changes in operations, capacity, and legislation, AIS Environmental was appointed by Oiltanking (Malta) Ltd. to help it adjourn its environmental permitting.

A risk assessment was undertaken in accordance with the EU “Seveso II” Directive on the Control of Major Accident Hazards, and industry best practices. This procedure involved the identification of hazards, their classification according to likelihood of occurrence and potential consequences, and the prediction of potential accident scenarios.

These scenarios were based on a qualitative cause and effect analysis, and the selected major accident scenarios were modelled.

AIS Environmental’s experts proposed appropriate controls and mitigation measures for each of the identified hazards.

Consultancy on the implementation of Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC)

environmentThe IPPC system applies an integrated environmental approach to the regulation of certain industrial activities.  This means that emissions to air, water (including discharges to sewer) and land, plus a range of other environmental effects, must be considered together.  The Competent Authority - Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) - must set permit conditions so as to achieve a high level of protection for the environment as a whole.  These conditions are based on the application of Best Available Techniques (BAT), which balances the costs to the operator against the benefits to the environment.  Ais Environmental has provided guidance to both MEPA as the Competenet Authority and relevant operators on the implementation of the EU IPPC Directive in Malta.  Of recent, Ais Environmental is offering guidance to various pharmaceutical entities, with respect to their obligations to IPPC regulations.
